Overview

The copper intrauterine device (IUD) is a non-hormonal, T-shaped contraceptive device made from low-density polyethylene with barium sulfate added for X-ray opacity. It typically has copper wire wound around the vertical stem and copper collars on the horizontal arms, with a total copper surface area of 380 mm². The device works primarily by preventing fertilization through the cytotoxic effect of copper on sperm and by creating an inflammatory response in the uterus that prevents implantation of a fertilized egg. It is one of the most effective forms of long-acting reversible contraception with a failure rate of approximately 0.8% in the first year of use. The copper IUD can remain effective for up to 10-12 years and can also be used as emergency contraception when inserted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.
