Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Coptis chinensis is a perennial herb native to China and a member of the Ranunculaceae family. Known as Huang Lian in Chinese medicine, it is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The dried rhizome is used medicinally for its extremely bitter taste and cold nature. Its primary active constituents are isoquinoline alkaloids such as berberine, palmatine, and coptisine. Coptis chinensis exhibits antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal), anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, hypolipidemic (lipid-lowering), hepatoprotective (liver-protecting), cardiovascular protective effects and has been studied for anticancer properties. In TCM it is used to clear heat and dry dampness—treating conditions like diarrhea/dysentery due to damp-heat in the gastrointestinal tract; infections; skin diseases; diabetes; high fever with agitation; heart fire symptoms such as restlessness or insomnia; bleeding disorders related to blood heat; eczema and conjunctivitis. Modern research highlights berberine’s role in metabolic regulation including blood sugar control and lipid metabolism[1][2][3][5][6][7][8].
