Overview

Corchorus olitorius seed extract is a botanical substance derived from the seeds of the Nalta jute plant, a species widely utilized as a leafy vegetable in Middle Eastern and African cuisines. Unlike the leaves, the seeds contain a potent concentration of strophanthidin-type cardiac glycosides, most notably corchoroside A and olitoriside. The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+-ATPase) pump, which results in a positive inotropic effect similar to that of digitalis or digoxin. While the extract has a history of use in traditional medicine for its purported cardiotonic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties, modern biotech research has also explored its cytotoxic potential against various cancer cell lines. Due to its potent effect on cardiac contractility, the seeds are generally considered toxic in concentrated forms and have not been developed into standardized pharmaceutical drugs by major commercial entities.
