Cord-blood-derived embryonic-like stem cells (CBEs) are a distinct population of multipotent stem cells isolated from human umbilical cord blood. They are characterized by their ability to adhere to plastic and their expression of pluripotency markers typically associated with embryonic stem cells, such as OCT4, NANOG, and SOX2, while remaining non-tumorigenic. CBEs are the functional component of "Stem Cell Educator" therapy, an extracorporeal treatment where a patient's lymphocytes are circulated through a device containing adherent CBEs. During this interaction, the CBEs modulate the immune cells through cell-to-cell contact and the release of soluble factors like TGF-beta 1 and nitric oxide. This process "re-educates" autoreactive T cells, promotes the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs), and restores immune balance, making it a promising candidate for treating autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes and alopecia areata.
