Overview

Cord blood platelet gel (CBPG) is a blood-derived biologic product for topical application, produced from allogeneic umbilical cord blood units. It is prepared by concentrating platelets from cord blood, which are then cryopreserved and activated (typically with calcium gluconate) to form a bioactive gel. CBPG contains a high concentration of growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor (TGF), which promote tissue repair and angiogenesis. Compared to adult-derived platelet-rich plasma (PRP), CBPG is reported to have a distinct growth factor profile and a lower risk of microbiological contamination. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, and severe oral mucositis following high-dose chemotherapy.
