Cordyceps is a genus of parasitic fungi traditionally used in Chinese medicine. The most well-known species for medicinal use are Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris. Cordyceps supplements are available as capsules or extracts and are promoted for a variety of health benefits including boosting energy and stamina; supporting immune function; improving kidney health; reducing inflammation; stabilizing blood sugar levels; lowering cholesterol; enhancing sexual performance; and potentially inhibiting tumor growth[2][3][4][5][6]. Mechanistically in laboratory studies and animal models it has been shown to stimulate T helper cells and natural killer cell activity; prolong lymphocyte survival; enhance production of TNF-alpha and IL1 cytokines; inhibit platelet aggregation via cordycepin content by lowering calcium ion/thromboxane A2 activity[5]; downregulate MHC class II antigen expression on tumor cells[5]; reduce oxidative stress through antioxidant effects[2][4]; lower blood glucose/lipids in diabetes models[2][6]; improve renal function markers in chronic kidney disease patients[4]. However most clinical evidence is limited or inconclusive with few large-scale human trials.
