Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Coriandrum sativum* seeds, commonly known as coriander seeds, are the dried fruits of the coriander plant. They are widely utilized in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Unani, for their carminative, digestive, and anti-diabetic properties. The seeds contain a complex mixture of volatile oils, primarily linalool (60–70%), along with geraniol, camphor, and various polyphenols. Pharmacologically, coriander seeds exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic activities. Their mechanism of action involves the stimulation of insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells, the inhibition of key enzymes in cholesterol synthesis like HMG-CoA reductase, and the modulation of GABAergic neurotransmission, which contributes to observed anxiolytic and sedative effects.
