Overview

Coricidin HBP Maximum Strength Multi-Symptom Flu is an over-the-counter (OTC) combination medication specifically formulated for individuals with high blood pressure, as it is free of decongestants like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine. It contains three active ingredients: acetaminophen (a pain reliever and fever reducer), chlorpheniramine maleate (a first-generation antihistamine), and dextromethorphan hydrobromide (a cough suppressant). Acetaminophen works primarily by inhibiting prostaglandin G/H synthase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) in the central nervous system and interacting with the endocannabinoid system and TRPV1 receptors. Chlorpheniramine maleate acts as an antagonist at histamine H1 receptors to relieve symptoms such as runny nose and sneezing. Dextromethorphan hydrobromide suppresses the cough reflex by acting as an agonist at sigma-1 receptors and an antagonist at NMDA receptors, while also inhibiting the serotonin transporter. Originally developed by Schering-Plough and currently owned by Bayer, this oral tablet is indicated for the relief of fever, body aches, headache, sore throat, cough, runny nose, and sneezing associated with the common cold or flu.
