Overview

Corifollitropin alfa is a long-acting recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) analog. It is designed for controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) and for the treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in adolescent males. Its prolonged action, which allows for a single injection to replace multiple daily injections of conventional FSH, is achieved by fusing the C-terminal peptide of the beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to the beta-chain of human FSH. This structural modification extends its half-life. Corifollitropin alfa acts as an agonist of the FSH receptor, stimulating the growth and development of ovarian follicles in women and promoting testicular growth and sperm production in males. It was originally developed by Organon/Schering-Plough and is currently marketed by Merck & Co. (MSD) in many countries.
