Overview
Corn oil is a vegetable oil derived from the germ of corn (maize), primarily composed of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid. In the context of AstraZeneca's cardiovascular clinical research, corn oil was utilized as the placebo control in the large-scale Phase III STRENGTH trial. This trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of Epanova (omega-3 carboxylic acids) in reducing major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in statin-treated patients with hypertriglyceridemia and high cardiovascular risk. Corn oil was selected as a comparator because it was considered a neutral lipid control that would not interfere with cardiovascular outcomes. The STRENGTH trial was terminated early in January 2020 after an interim analysis by an independent Data Monitoring Committee concluded that Epanova was unlikely to demonstrate a clinical benefit over the corn oil placebo.
