Cornu cervi pantotrichum (CCP), also known as Lu Rong or pilose antler, is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredient derived from the young, hairy, non-ossified antlers of male deer, primarily Cervus nippon Temminck or Cervus elaphus Linnaeus. It is widely recognized as a 'yang-invigorating agent' in TCM, traditionally used to tonify the kidney and liver, supplement essence and blood, strengthen tendons and bones, and promote healing. Its chemical composition includes proteins, amino acids, various minerals (such as Ca, P, K, Al, Zn, Cu, Fe), lipids, polypeptides, polysaccharides, phospholipids, and cell growth factors like insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and growth hormone-releasing factor (GHRF-6). Modern research indicates that CCP possesses multifunctional bioactivities, including immune modulation, anti-fatigue effects, anti-osteoporosis properties, anti-inflammatory actions, hematopoietic modulation, and antioxidant activity. It has been studied for its potential to improve physiological adaptations during intensive endurance training and to activate the autonomic nervous system.
