Overview

Cornus fruit, derived from the plant *Cornus officinalis* Sieb. et Zucc., is a traditional herbal medicine (known as Shanzhuyu in Pinyin) widely used in East Asian practices for its health-promoting properties. It contains bioactive iridoid glycosides such as loganin and morroniside, as well as triterpenoids like oleanolic acid. Pharmacological research indicates that cornus fruit exerts anti-diabetic effects by promoting the release of acetylcholine from nerve terminals, which subsequently activates muscarinic M3 receptors on pancreatic beta cells to enhance insulin secretion. Additionally, it has been shown to inhibit glucagon-induced CREB activation and act as an antagonist for the TH2-specific chemokine receptor CCR3, suggesting potential therapeutic utility in managing type 2 diabetes and allergic conditions.
