Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CoronaVac is a whole inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech for the prevention of COVID-19. It contains chemically inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus particles and is adjuvanted with aluminum hydroxide to enhance immune response. The vaccine works by exposing the immune system to the entire killed virus, stimulating both humoral (antibody-mediated) and cell-mediated immunity against multiple viral proteins, including spike and nucleocapsid proteins. Clinical trials have shown that two doses provide moderate efficacy against symptomatic infection but high protection against severe disease and hospitalization. CoronaVac has been approved for use in many countries worldwide for adults aged 18 years and older[1][2][3][8].
