Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cortex Moutan Capsule is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapeutic derived from the root bark of *Paeonia suffruticosa* (Cortex Moutan). It is primarily utilized in clinical research for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and mild to moderate depressive episodes. The drug is hypothesized to work by regulating the liver system in TCM, which corresponds to the modulation of neuroendocrine and inflammatory pathways, including central and peripheral markers. In clinical trials sponsored by Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has been evaluated alongside other TCM formulations like Baixiangdan Capsule and compared against the SSRI fluoxetine to assess its efficacy in emotional regulation and symptom relief. Active constituents of the extract, such as paeonol, are known to possess anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.
