Cortexin is a peptide bioregulator consisting of a complex of water-soluble polypeptide fractions extracted from the cerebral cortex of cattle or pigs, with molecular weights typically below 10,000 Da. Developed by the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, it functions as a nootropic, neuroprotective, and antioxidant agent. Its mechanism of action involves the regulation of neurotransmitter metabolism, specifically balancing excitatory (glutamate) and inhibitory (GABA) amino acids, and activating the serotonergic system. It also demonstrates antioxidant properties by controlling lipid peroxidation and improving neuronal metabolism under stress. Cortexin is approved in Russia and CIS countries for the treatment of various neurological conditions, including cognitive impairment, traumatic brain injury, and cerebrovascular disorders.
