Corticorelin ovine triflutate is a synthetic peptide that mimics the naturally occurring human corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). It acts as a potent stimulator of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) release from the anterior pituitary gland, which in turn stimulates cortisol production from the adrenal cortex. The drug is primarily used as a diagnostic agent to differentiate between pituitary and ectopic sources of ACTH in patients with ACTH-dependent Cushing's syndrome. If administration leads to increased plasma ACTH and cortisol, it suggests a pituitary source; lack of response indicates an ectopic source. Corticorelin has an amino acid sequence identical to that of ovine CRH and is available under the brand name Acthrel[1][3][7].
