Overview
Corticosteroid + bupivacaine is a combination drug intervention used in CT-guided perineural injections for the treatment of acute lumbar radiculopathy and intervertebral disc herniation. This combination consists of a corticosteroid, which acts as a steroidal anti-inflammatory agent by targeting glucocorticoid receptors to reduce local inflammation and nerve root irritation, and bupivacaine, a long-acting local anesthetic that provides a nerve block by inhibiting sodium channels. The treatment is typically administered directly around the affected spinal nerve root under CT imaging guidance. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by Montefiore Medical Center to compare its efficacy against standard medical management in patients with disabling pain from herniated discs.
