Overview

Cortisone is a synthetic corticosteroid hormone (glucocorticoid) used to treat a wide range of inflammatory, autoimmune, and hormonal conditions. It works by suppressing the immune response and reducing inflammation throughout the body. Cortisone itself is inactive and must be converted in the liver to its active form, cortisol, via 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1. Its primary mechanisms include binding to glucocorticoid receptors to inhibit pro-inflammatory signals and promote anti-inflammatory gene expression. Indications for cortisone include rheumatoid arthritis, various allergic reactions, skin disorders (such as eczema), endocrine disorders like Addison’s disease (as hormone replacement), respiratory diseases such as asthma, certain cancers for symptom relief, and other conditions responsive to corticosteroids[2][7][8][9]. It can be administered orally or by injection.
