Overview

Corydalis tuber extract is a **botanical extract** derived from the dried tubers of Corydalis yanhusuo, a plant in the Papaveraceae family widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine[1][3][4]. The extract contains a rich mixture of pharmacologically active alkaloids, with **dehydrocorydaline**, **tetrahydropalmatine (THP)**, **corydaline**, **corydalmine**, **berberine**, **protopine**, **palmatine**, and others as principal ingredients[1][3]. The mechanism of action is multi-targeted and additive, involving: - Analgesic activity: likely mediated through modulation of **dopamine receptors**, **NMDA receptors**, and **mGlu1/5 receptors** by alkaloids such as THP, isocorypalmine, and rotundinum[3]. - Anti-inflammatory effect: primarily linked to dehydrocorydaline and related alkaloids that inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine release (TNF-α, IL-6), promote IκB-α expression, and suppress NF-κB activation[3]. - Antithrombotic activity: inhibition of platelet aggregation mediated by antagonism of **P2Y12**, **P2Y1**, and **PAR1** receptors[1]. - Additional effects: anti-arrhythmic, antimyocardial infarction, anti-anxiety, antidepressant, sedative, anti-epileptic, antihypertensive, antithrombotic, anticancer (inhibition of tumor cell proliferation and angiogenesis), antidiabetic, liver and gastrointestinal protection, antimicrobial, and antiviral[1][2][3]. - Corydalis tuber extract is mostly studied in the context of pain relief (peripheral neuropathy, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain), inflammation, cardiovascular events, and as an adjunct in mental health[1][2][3]. It is typically administered orally in 5–10 grams daily or as an equivalent extract[2]. Safety concerns exist, especially regarding THP related hepatotoxicity, thus caution is warranted[2]. Substantial clinical validation in humans is currently lacking; most data are from animal or in vitro studies[2][3].
