Overview

Cosiporfin sodium, also known as DVDMS or Sinoporphyrin sodium, is a small molecule photosensitizer used in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is a sodium salt of an ether-linked porphyrin dimer. When administered and subsequently activated by light of a specific wavelength (typically 630 nm), cosiporfin sodium generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily singlet oxygen. These ROS induce oxidative damage, leading to tumor cell death through mitochondrial-dependent and extrinsic apoptotic pathways. It preferentially accumulates in tumor cells and has been shown to inhibit the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Bcl-xL, while increasing cleaved caspase-3 levels. Additionally, it contributes to vascular obstruction within cancerous tissues. Cosiporfin sodium is being investigated for its antineoplastic effects, particularly in advanced esophageal cancer.
