Counterpain

Counterpain is a topical analgesic product line developed and manufactured by Taisho Pharmaceutical, primarily marketed in Thailand and other Southeast Asian regions. It is indicated for the temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain associated with strains, bruises, sprains, arthritis, and backaches. The product is available in several formulations, including Counterpain Original (Warm), Counterpain Cool, and Counterpain Plus. The standard formulation contains a combination of methyl salicylate, menthol, and eugenol. Methyl salicylate acts as a counter-irritant and anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, while menthol provides a cooling sensation through the activation of TRPM8 receptors to alleviate pain perception. The Counterpain Plus variant incorporates piroxicam, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that provides enhanced relief by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes at the site of application.
