Overview

COVAC-1 is a protein subunit COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) at the University of Saskatchewan. The vaccine contains a purified S1 portion of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which is the primary component responsible for viral attachment to host cells. To enhance the immune response, COVAC-1 is formulated with TriAdj, a triple-component adjuvant consisting of a toll-like receptor agonist (polyI:C), an immunostimulatory host defense protein (HDP IDR-1002), and a polyphosphazene carrier system (PCEP). Developed based on expertise with SARS and MERS, the vaccine aims to stimulate the production of neutralizing antibodies to prevent or reduce the severity of COVID-19. It has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults.
