Overview

COVAC-2 is a protein subunit vaccine developed for the prevention of COVID-19. It contains the S1 subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which is responsible for viral attachment to host cells. The vaccine is formulated with Sepivac SWE, an oil-in-water adjuvant designed to enhance immune response, similar to MF59 used in influenza vaccines. COVAC-2 stimulates production of antibodies against the S1 protein, including neutralizing antibodies that can prevent severe COVID-19 illness. Clinical trials have shown that it induces high levels of antigen-specific binding and neutralizing antibodies and has a favorable safety profile with mostly mild adverse events such as injection site pain and headache. No significant T cell response was detected in early studies[3][4][5][7].
