Overview
COVAX-19 (marketed as SpikoGen in Iran) is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine developed by the Australian biotechnology company Vaxine in collaboration with CinnaGen. The vaccine consists of the extracellular domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, produced using an insect cell expression system (Sf9 cells). It is formulated with Vaxine's proprietary Advax-SM adjuvant, which is based on delta-inulin, a unique polysaccharide that enhances both humoral and cellular immune responses. Unlike many other adjuvants, Advax-SM is designed to be non-inflammatory while effectively stimulating T-cell and B-cell immunity. COVAX-19 was the first Australian-developed COVID-19 vaccine to enter human clinical trials and received Emergency Use Authorization in Iran in October 2021 following successful Phase 3 trials.
