COVAXIN is a whole-virion inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine developed for the prevention of COVID-19. It uses a traditional platform where the entire virus is grown in Vero cells and then inactivated with beta-propiolactone, rendering it non-infectious while preserving its ability to stimulate an immune response. The vaccine includes an aluminium-based adjuvant (Alhydroxiquim-II) to enhance immunogenicity. Developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV), COVAXIN was India's first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine and has been widely used within India and approved for emergency use in several other countries. Its primary mechanism is to induce protective immunity against SARS-CoV-2 by presenting the immune system with all viral proteins, not just spike protein[1][2][3][4][6].
