Overview

COVIBEL is a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate developed for the prevention of COVID-19. It is the result of a collaborative effort between the Turkish pharmaceutical company Nobel Pharmaceuticals, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), Middle East Technical University (METU), and Bilkent University. The vaccine is designed to present SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens to the immune system using non-infectious particles that mimic the virus's structure but lack genetic material. This protein-based approach aims to trigger both humoral and cellular immune responses without the risks associated with live-attenuated or viral vector platforms. COVIBEL entered Phase 2 clinical development in 2021 and has been recognized on the World Health Organization's list of candidate vaccines.
