Overview

COVID-19 convalescent hyperimmune plasma is a blood-derived biologic therapy consisting of plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 and possess high titers of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Developed by the Federal Research Clinical Center of the Federal Medical & Biological Agency (FMBA) in Russia, this therapy is intended for the treatment of patients with moderate to severe COVID-19. The mechanism of action involves passive immunization, where the transfused antibodies bind to the viral spike protein, neutralizing the virus and preventing its entry into host cells, thereby reducing viral load and mitigating disease progression. Unlike standard fresh frozen plasma, hyperimmune plasma is specifically selected or processed to ensure a high concentration of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.
