COVID-19 convalescent immunoglobulin is a hyperimmune globulin therapy derived from the pooled plasma of donors who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Developed by researchers at the Union Hospital of Tongji Medical College and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in collaboration with industrial partners like China National Biotec Group (CNBG), this product contains high titers of polyclonal neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies specifically target the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, preventing its interaction with the host ACE2 receptor and thereby inhibiting viral entry and replication. Unlike raw convalescent plasma, this immunoglobulin preparation is purified and concentrated to provide a standardized dose of antibodies, aiming to provide passive immunity to patients with COVID-19 and reduce the severity of the disease. The therapy was primarily investigated during the early stages of the pandemic as a means to treat hospitalized patients and those at high risk of progression to severe illness.
