Drug intelligence / Profile preview
COVID-19 convalescent plasma is a treatment that provides passive immunity through the transfusion of plasma collected from donors who have recovered from COVID-19 and developed antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The plasma contains antibodies that can help fight the infection through direct viral neutralization and Fc-dependent functions such as phagocytosis, complement activation, and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. It is typically used for patients who are immunocompromised or have weak immune systems, particularly when administered early in the course of disease. While it was widely used during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic when other treatments were unavailable, its use has become less common as other therapies have been developed.
