Overview

COVID-19 convalescent plasma developed by the Centro de Educación Médica e Investigaciones Clínicas Norberto Quirno (CEMIC) is a biological therapy derived from the plasma of individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This therapy contains high titers of polyclonal antibodies (median titer 1:3200) that specifically target the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and its receptor-binding domain (RBD). By binding to these viral components, the antibodies neutralize the virus and prevent it from entering host cells, thereby providing passive immunity to the recipient. This specific preparation was evaluated in the PlasmAr trial, a Phase 3 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in Argentina. The trial focused on hospitalized adult patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia but found no significant difference in clinical outcomes or mortality at 30 days compared to the placebo group.
