COVID-19 convalescent plasma (Makerere University)

COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) developed by Makerere University is a blood-derived biologic therapy intended for the treatment of COVID-19. It consists of plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection, containing high titers of neutralizing antibodies. The mechanism of action involves the passive transfer of these antibodies to neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus and modulate the immune response in infected patients. The therapy was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial in Uganda, led by the Makerere University Lung Institute in collaboration with the Uganda Blood Transfusion Service and Johns Hopkins University, to assess its safety and efficacy in hospitalized adults with COVID-19.
