COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) is a biologic therapy consisting of blood plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 infection. It serves as a form of passive immunotherapy, providing a diverse pool of polyclonal antibodies (primarily IgG, IgA, and IgM) that target the SARS-CoV-2 virus, specifically the spike protein. These antibodies neutralize the virus to prevent infection of host cells and facilitate viral clearance. This specific therapeutic modality was investigated in the CAPRI (Convalescent Plasma for Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients) study, a randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial led by Dr. Priscilla Hsue at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The study evaluated the efficacy of high-titer CCP in preventing mechanical ventilation or death in hospitalized patients with acute respiratory symptoms.
