Overview

COVID-19 convalescent plasma is a biological therapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from a SARS-CoV-2 infection. This plasma contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies that provide passive immunity to recipients. In the EPIC-19 study conducted by Wroclaw Medical University, the plasma is harvested via apheresis from donors at least four weeks post-recovery, inactivated to ensure safety, and administered in 200 mL doses to hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19. The primary therapeutic mechanism involves the transferred antibodies binding to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, thereby neutralizing the virus and preventing it from entering host cells, which may reduce disease severity and improve clinical outcomes.
