COVID-19 inactivated vaccine (Vero cell) refers to a category of vaccines developed to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection using a traditional inactivated virus platform. The production process involves cultivating the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Vero cell lines (derived from African green monkey kidney epithelial cells), followed by chemical inactivation, typically with beta-propiolactone. This process preserves the structural integrity of the viral particles, including the spike, nucleocapsid, envelope, and membrane proteins, allowing them to be recognized by the immune system without the risk of viral replication. These vaccines are usually formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance the immune response. Several vaccines of this type have received emergency use listing or full approval globally, most notably those developed by Sinopharm and Sinovac. In clinical research, such as the ChiCTR2100052965 trial, these vaccines are being explored for their ability to induce humoral immunity and promote viral clearance in patients with persistent SARS-CoV-2 infections.
