COVID-19-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are an investigational allogeneic cell therapy developed by Thomas Jefferson University for the treatment of elderly and high-risk patients with active COVID-19 infection. This 'off-the-shelf' therapeutic approach utilizes T cells harvested from healthy volunteer donors who have previously recovered from COVID-19. These donor T cells are expanded and manufactured to specifically recognize SARS-CoV-2 antigens. When administered intravenously, these third-party CTLs are intended to provide immediate cellular immunity by identifying and lysing virus-infected cells, thereby reducing viral load and preventing severe disease progression in patients who may be unable to mount an effective natural immune response.
