The co-administration of a COVID-19 vaccine and the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) is a clinical strategy used to protect individuals, particularly older adults and those with underlying medical conditions, against both SARS-CoV-2 and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The COVID-19 vaccine component, which may utilize mRNA, viral vector, or protein subunit platforms, induces an immune response against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The PPSV23 component (e.g., Pneumovax 23) contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 common pneumococcal serotypes, providing broad protection against invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia. Clinical studies have demonstrated that simultaneous administration of these vaccines is safe and maintains an effective immune response for both pathogens, facilitating higher vaccination coverage during healthcare visits.
