Overview
COVID‑19 Vaccine Moderna is an mRNA-based vaccine developed to prevent infection with SARS-CoV‑2, the virus that causes COVID‑19. The original formulation (mRNA‑1273) encodes a stabilized form of the spike protein from the virus, prompting an immune response that protects against symptomatic and severe disease. The next-generation version (mRNA‑1283, brand name mNEXSPIKE) is designed for improved efficacy and easier storage. Both vaccines use lipid nanoparticle delivery of messenger RNA encoding the viral spike protein.
