CoviGlobulin is a hyperimmune globulin (H-Ig) therapy developed for the treatment of COVID-19. It is produced by concentrating neutralizing antibodies from the plasma of individuals who have recovered from the virus (convalescent plasma). Unlike standard intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), hyperimmune globulins are standardized to contain high titers of specific antibodies against a particular pathogen—in this case, SARS-CoV-2. The mechanism of action involves passive immunization, where the administered antibodies neutralize the virus, preventing it from entering host cells and potentially modulating the inflammatory response. It was evaluated in the Phase 3 ITAC (Inpatient Treatment with Anti-Coronavirus Immunoglobulin) trial, which was conducted by the CoVIg-19 Plasma Alliance, a consortium including Biotest, Kedrion, Takeda, and CSL Behring. However, the trial failed to meet its primary endpoint, leading to the discontinuation of the program for hospitalized patients.
