Drug intelligence / Profile preview
COVIran Barakat is an inactivated virus-based vaccine developed by Shifa Pharmed Industrial Group, a subsidiary of the Barkat Pharmaceutical Group, for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine is produced using the BIV1 strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is chemically inactivated (typically using beta-propiolactone) and adsorbed onto an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant. By presenting the entire killed virus to the immune system, the vaccine induces a broad immune response against multiple viral proteins, including the spike, envelope, and nucleocapsid proteins. It was the first COVID-19 vaccine developed in the Middle East to receive emergency use authorization, which was granted by the Iran Food and Drug Administration in June 2021.
