Overview

COVIV is an intranasal, live-attenuated influenza virus-vectored vaccine candidate developed by the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with Wuhan University and Changchun BCHT Biotechnology. The vaccine utilizes a cold-adapted, live-attenuated influenza virus (LAIV) backbone that has been genetically engineered to express the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Administered via the intranasal route, COVIV is designed to mimic the natural infection path of respiratory viruses, thereby inducing robust mucosal immunity (secretory IgA) in the respiratory tract, in addition to systemic humoral and cellular immune responses. This approach aims to provide dual protection against both seasonal influenza and COVID-19, and potentially prevent complications such as viral pneumonia. As of 2021, the candidate entered Phase I/II clinical trials in China.
