CoviVac is an inactivated whole-virion vaccine developed by the Chumakov Federal Scientific Center for Research and Development of Immune-and-Biological Products to prevent COVID-19. The vaccine is produced by cultivating the SARS-CoV-2 strain AYDAR-1 in Vero cells, followed by inactivation with beta-propiolactone and purification. It is formulated with aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. Unlike mRNA or viral vector vaccines that focus primarily on the spike protein, CoviVac presents the entire inactivated virus to the immune system, potentially inducing a broader immune response against multiple viral structural proteins, including the nucleocapsid, envelope, and membrane proteins. It is typically administered as a two-dose intramuscular regimen and is notable for its stability at standard refrigeration temperatures (2-8°C), facilitating easier distribution compared to ultra-cold chain vaccines.
