CoviVac is an inactivated whole-virion COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Chumakov Federal Scientific Center for Research and Development of Immune-and-Biological Products. The vaccine utilizes the AYDAR-1 strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is cultured in Vero cells and subsequently inactivated using beta-propiolactone. It is formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance the immune response. Unlike mRNA or viral vector vaccines that target specific proteins such as the spike protein, CoviVac presents the entire inactivated virus structure to the immune system, potentially inducing a broader immune response against multiple viral antigens. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection in a two-dose regimen, typically with a 14-day interval between doses. It was approved for use in Russia in February 2021.
