Overview

Cowhage, derived from the tropical legume *Mucuna pruriens*, refers to the plant's spicules or extracts. Its active component, mucunain, is a cysteine protease. Cowhage is widely used in research as an experimental inducer of itch and inflammation, particularly to study non-histaminergic itch pathways in conditions such as atopic dermatitis. It activates protease-activated receptors (PAR-2 and PAR-4) on cutaneous cells and nerve endings.
