CP‑94707 is an experimental small molecule belonging to the phenylimidazole class. It acts as a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), targeting HIV‑1 reverse transcriptase. Structural studies show that it binds to the NNRTI pocket of HIV‑1 reverse transcriptase and inhibits both wild-type and mutant forms of the enzyme that are resistant to other NNRTIs such as nevirapine, efavirenz, and delavirdine. The compound’s unique binding mode allows it to retain activity against clinically relevant resistant mutants by accommodating conformational changes in the binding pocket[4][5]. It has not been approved for clinical use and remains at an experimental stage.
