Overview

CPDA-1 (Citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic intravenous solution used as an anticoagulant and preservative for the collection and storage of whole blood and red blood cells. It contains sodium citrate (as an anticoagulant), citric acid (buffering agent), monobasic sodium phosphate (buffering agent), dextrose (energy source for red blood cells), and adenine (to support ATP synthesis in stored erythrocytes). The addition of adenine extends the shelf life of stored whole blood from 21 to 35 days compared to earlier solutions. CPDA-1 is widely used in human and veterinary transfusion medicine to maintain red cell viability during storage[1][2][5].
