Overview

CPFPX (8-cyclopentyl-3-(3-fluoropropyl)-1-propylxanthine) is a selective radiopharmaceutical tracer used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. It functions as a high-affinity antagonist for the adenosine A1 receptor (A1R). The tracer is primarily used in clinical research to map and quantify the density and distribution of A1 receptors in the central nervous system. In the context of epilepsy, CPFPX PET imaging is employed to investigate alterations in the adenosinergic system, which is known to play a role in seizure termination and neuroprotection. The BRAVE study, for instance, utilizes [18F]CPFPX to assess receptor binding in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy and its relationship to respiratory control under hypercapnic conditions.
