Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CpG 7909-adjuvanted pneumococcal vaccine is a combination vaccine regimen evaluated by the University of Aarhus for the prevention of pneumococcal disease, particularly in immunocompromised populations such as HIV-infected adults. The regimen utilizes existing pneumococcal vaccines—specifically the 7-valent conjugate vaccine (Prevenar) and the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumo Novum)—administered in conjunction with CpG 7909. CpG 7909 is a synthetic B-class oligodeoxynucleotide that acts as a Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) agonist. By targeting TLR9 on B-cells and plasmacytoid dendritic cells, the adjuvant is designed to enhance the magnitude and quality of the immune response to the pneumococcal antigens, potentially overcoming the suboptimal vaccine responses typically observed in HIV-infected individuals.
