Overview

CPV-159 is a thiosulfinate derivative and cyclic disulfide compound developed by the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy as a thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) inhibitor for the potential treatment of cancer, particularly breast cancer. It selectively blocks TrxR activity, leading to the inhibition of tumor growth. In preclinical screenings against a panel of breast cancer cell lines (including MCF-7, ZR-75-1, BT-20, MDA-MB-468, SkBr-3, BT-474, and MDA-MB-231), CPV-159 demonstrated potent cytotoxic activity, inhibiting cell proliferation by 80% to 99%. Notably, CPV-159 showed minimal toxicity toward the non-malignant breast cell line MCF-12A, suggesting a favorable selectivity profile compared to other thiosulfinate derivatives.
