CPV-164 is a small molecule cyclic thiosulfinate derivative developed by the University of Puerto Rico. It acts as an inhibitor of thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR1), an enzyme that is overexpressed in various cancers and plays a critical role in cellular redox regulation, antioxidant defense, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. In preclinical in vitro studies, CPV-164 demonstrated significant cytotoxic activity and inhibition of cell proliferation against a panel of breast cancer cell lines.
