CQ-QRL is an investigational photodynamic therapy (PDT) system developed by Anessa Pharma for the treatment of skin cancer. The product is a drug-device combination consisting of a topical photosensitizing agent and a specialized external light irradiation device. The mechanism of action involves the selective uptake of the topical drug by malignant cells; upon activation by specific wavelengths of light from the irradiation device, the drug generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen. These ROS induce localized oxidative damage, leading to tumor cell death (apoptosis and necrosis) and microvascular disruption within the cancerous tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy skin. CQ-QRL is part of Anessa Pharma's ClearQ platform and is currently in Phase 1 clinical development.
